Normally, the league gives teams until noon on the Thursday prior to a Sunday game to sell-out their game and therefore avoid a blackout. However, with tickets selling better than they have since the first game of the 2009 season, the Raiders have asked and have received a 24 hour extension to meet the sellout requirements for this Sunday’s game versus the Kansas City Chiefs.
The rapid ticket sales is mostly due to the team’s sudden resurgence that have pulled them from a 1-3 record to a 4-4 record heading into a pivotal matchup against the AFC West leading Chiefs. There was also a 2 for 1 ticket special being offered through Compass Media Networks that has helped push ticket sales (which are no longer available). Although, that is not the primary reason as evidenced by the fact that they offered the same deal for last week’s game against the Seahawks on Halloween and still barely went over 35k for the game.
The Raiders now have until noon Friday to reach the minimum of 60,000 tickets sold. There is no word as to how many tickets have been sold thus far but it is important to note that teams almost always sell-out games in which an extension was requested. Some times thanks to a local company stepping up to purchase the remaining tickets to ensure the game is televised.
So, it looks like the Raiders will sell-out for the first time in 11 home games which is great news for everyone, especially the Raider players who will have the full might of the Raider Nation backing them as they try for several milestones: 3 straight games, a winning record past week three, beating the AFC West division leader, and going 3-0 versus their AFC West opponents.
