The Raiders were in need of a blocking tight end and they got their man in Robert Gordon from Miami. He is a huge target at 6-4, 265, although “target” may not be the word to describe him. He only had 10 catches in his entire career at Miami. But the continuing thread here is he is another track guy.
In years past people have said the Raiders have the making of a great 4×100 relay team. But in this draft, they literally have that. Gordon was a member of the 4×100 track team in highschool like his fellow draftees DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa.
The rundown on Gordon is that he would be a number three tight end and blocking tight end with special team’s contributions. But with his size and speed (4.66 40), the Raiders will no doubt be looking to get him down field and try to get the ball in his hands.
The Raiders used Khalif Barnes as their blocking tight end last season and in the mean time, he caught two passes—one for a touch down. Gordon will certainly be an upgrade from putting an offensive tackle in at tight end but Barnes’ one touchdown was one more than Gordon had in his college career. Which is to say he had none.
Gordon is a five year senior coming out of Miami as he sat out nearly the entire season in 2009 due to injury. Six of his ten catches came during his senior season and he averaged 5 yards per catch.
