The Raider players concluded a four day OTA style camp at the end of May. The camp was such a success that plans were almost immediately put in place to get together again during the offseason. Now Raider receiver Louis Murphy has confirmed that the team will hold another camp in July.
No word yet on what the itinerary will be for the July camp. In the previous camp the team implemented the playbook in 7-on-7 drills against other NFL players. There were five rookies in attendance looking to get a feel for their new teammates. The additional camp will continue that process and hopefully it will include the three Raider draft picks who weren’t in attendance.
Richard Seymour arranged and funded the last camp. We will see if one of his Raider teammates steps up and foots the bill this time.
This camp is very likely contingent upon whether a new CBA can be reached in the meantime. There are rumors bubbling up again that an agreement between the NFL and the players could be reached in the coming days. If that happens, the player planned camp could be canceled in favor of regularly scheduled training camp.
Then again, the Raiders could simply take the already planned player camp and make it official. An additional minicamp would be much needed to acclimate whatever undrafted free agents as well as any veteran free agents the team may acquire. There is much lost time to make up for either way.
