A few weeks ago, Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowksi was running a jugs machine at practice, recovering from an injured hamstring. Even as early as last week, he was still hampered by the injury and unable to kick his usual booming kickoffs and long field goals. Now he has set a new franchise record.
Early in the fourth quarter, Janikowski lined up and drilled a 44 yard field goal to break a Raiders franchise record for most field goals in a single game. It was his sixth of the game to break a record that had stood for 50 years.
Janikowski tied the franchise record in the third quarter. This was the second time he kicked five field goals in a game. He also did it back in 2007.
Most of his field goals came from 40+ yards as well. He hit field goals of 40, 48, 42, 19, 37, and 44 yards out.
Janikowski already tied NFL records earlier this season. His 63 yarder in the season opener tied the NFL record for the longest field goal. Then a few weeks later he kicked three field goals of 50 yards or more in a single game.
He has earned Special Teams Player of the Week twice and was the September Special Teams Player of the Month. With his hamstring healthy again, we should expect a lot more games like these. As Janikowski said after the game: “There’s plenty more records to be broken.”
