According to profootballtalk.com, the Raiders had a representative present at former Baylor WR Josh Gordon’s workout, which occured yesterday. There were representatives from 21 of the 32 teams present, reportedly.
Gordon fits the physical profile of what Reggie McKenzie has been looking for at the WR position, standing 6’3″ and 224 pounds. He also reportedly ran a 4.52 40, which is an impressive time. He tweaked his leg on the first attempt at the 40 and did not run a second but he was still able to complete the workout.
He measured an impressive 82 inch wingspan which means he’ll be able to snag high balls out of the air that smaller DBs will have no chance at intercepting.
Gordon was dismissed from the Baylor team after reportedly failing a drug test for marijuana. While McKenzie has expressed character as being extremely important to him, many GMs do not have as much concern about marijuana as they would about more serious crimes such as assault charges or theft. Marijuana use is very widespread in the NFL, especially during the offseason, and many teams choose to look the other way unless the player is caught or it is during the season.
The supplemental draft is tomorrow, Thursday July 12th. Teams must submit, by round, whether they wish to take a player with their pick. The player will be awarded to the team that submits the highest pick in the round. The order of selection is determined by a lottery system that would give the Raiders a pick somewhere between 11-20.
Gordon is expected to go for a 3rd or 4th round selection but all it takes is one team willing to risk a second round pick for his combination of size, speed and production.
With wide receiver being one of the deepest positions for the 2012 Raiders squad, it seems unlikely that McKenzie will put a bid in for Gordon. He has previously expressed interest in retaining his draft picks for use in their appropriate draft so as to maximize their effectiveness.
The team that selects Gordon will lose their pick in the corresponding round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
