Breaking: Senators Confirm RFQ Submission

So much for a slow news day, right?

The Senators have confirmed that they will “make a submission to the National Capital Commission’s (NCC) Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the redevelopment of LeBreton Flats.”

The news came when the Senators sent a news blast to this city’s sports media contingent. Fortunately, the Citizen‘s James Gordon was kind enough to copy and publish an image of the press release on Twitter.

Even though the organization had until January 7, 2015 to submit, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Senators will be making a formal submission, especially when Senators owner Eugene Melnyk appeared on Toronto radio and referred to the prospect of a new arena as “a game-changer for us” and that IF the Senators submitted one, it would arrive before the Christmas holidays so his employees would be able to relax and enjoy the holidays.

Although no details of the Senators submission will apparently be made available — at least until they leak in this day of the interwebs — earlier this month, the Senators did confirm to the Citizen‘s Joanne Chianello that they had beenapproached by numerous well-established private sector companies and community organizations who have expressed a strong desire to partner with us on developing a world-class proposal for the site.”

So here we are, even though it’s really just the first step in what stands to be a long process that they may not even win, we are one step closer to seeing a downtown arena be realized.
