According to the RCAF’s website:

Mr. Eugene Melnyk became the new honorary colonel of 414 Electronic Warfare Support Squadron during a ceremony in Ottawa on January 14, 2015.

Honorary Colonel Melnyk replaces outgoing Honorary Colonel Gerry Frappier, the president and director general of Réseau Des Sports, who has held the post since 2010.

Colonel Sylvain Menard, the commander of 3 Wing Bagotville, Quebec, conducted the ceremony along with the commanding officer of 414 Squadron, Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Robidoux.

As the owner of the Ottawa Senators, Honorary Colonel Melnyk is a prominent member of the community, and he devotes himself to several charitable ventures in Ontario, Barbados, and his ancestral homeland of Ukraine. He is a long-standing supporter of the Canadian Armed Forces; he visited Kandahar Air Field with the Chief of Defence Staff in 2007 bearing a gift of hockey equipment for use at the ball hockey rink by Canadian and American troops.

The “Knights” of 414 Squadron wish to pass their enduring gratitude to Honorary Colonel Frappier for his distinguished service to the squadron and the Royal Canadian Air Force.  They welcome Honorary Colonel Melnyk to his new post and look forward to working with him over the coming years.

414 Electronic Warfare Squadron – nicknamed “The Black Knights” – is located in Ottawa, but belongs to 3 Wing Bagotville, Quebec. The squadron provides electronic warfare support to the Canadian Armed Forces’ combat training.
