In a prime example of back scratching, the New York/ New Jersey Metro area was rewarded for their dedication to building a new state of the art stadium for the Giants/Jets by getting the Super Bowl for 2014. The cold weather restriction which used to be an average temperature of 50 degrees in the month of February was removed, as New York with its average of 40 degrees will host the first ever cold weather Super Bowl; without a retractable roof or dome of any kind. The end result could come out positive, if the weather cooperates. But if it doesn’t, the outcome could be a snowy icebowl type game with a 10-6 score, turnovers galore, and could possible open up the idea of a 4 or 5 city permanent rotation consisting of Tampa Bay, Miami, New Orleans, San Diego, and perhaps Arizona. Anyway you look at it, the risk/reward for this is tilted towards the risk only side. Its understandable that the city of New York is due this for its commitment to push through the stadium issue. But now it may be time to pay the piper. The Super Bowl has turned into a sort of unofficial national holiday, where the game and the players almost become second nature to the event itself. More people go over someones house for a Superbowl Party than on New Years Eve, and that exposure to a frozen tundra and/or a game with weather induced turnovers could turn out to be a major black eye for the NFL. At least they wont have to look far for an icebag!
