Friday night comeback keeps Crew in chase

I sat down at the restaurant Friday night and saw that the Braves led the Crew, 1-0…in the 7th. My wife (not only has she become more interested in baseball this year, I may have finally convinced her that she should root for the Brewers versus her family’s favorite team, the Cardinals (the three girlfriends before her were Cubs, Cubs, and Braves fans, respectively…how come women in this area don’t pull for the Crew? I digress…)) asked me how far back the Brewers were, and I coyly replied, “well one or two games, depending on how the Cubs did….”A moment later, ESPN revealed the Cubs had already won.
Somewhere between the tortilla chips and the pulled pork sandwich, Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, and Corey Hart hit consecutive singles to plate the Crew’s first run; next thing I see is Geoff Jenkins getting thrown out at home (actually, I could have sworn it was Rickie Weeks…not sure how I got that mixed up, but I’ll blame it on the whiskey)…at any rate, now only had Corey Hart scored before Jenkins, but Fielder had earlier on a bases loaded walk. I held my breath as Derrick Turnbow came on in the 8th, especially when the first few pitches were in the dirt. But Turnbow got out of it, Coco game in for his 44th save of the year, and the Crew managed to stay just 1½ back.
Yovani Gallardo (9-4, 3.66) draws John Smoltz (14-7, 2.97) tomorrow afternoon in FOX’s GOTW.
