ESPN.com is reporting that Francisco Cordero will sign with division rival Cincinnati:
The Cincinnati Reds have reached preliminary agreement on a four-year, $46 million contract with closer Francisco Cordero, a baseball source confirmed Friday to ESPN.com.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he offered Cordero a four-year, $42 million deal with an option for a fifth year.
So the Crew offered $10.5 million per year on average, and Coco will wind up with $11.5 million per year, on average.
My take: this seems to be a bit of a waste of money on Cincinnati’s part, as they are not going to be able to give Cordero that many save opportunities until they get some better starting pitching. Cordero also winds up in a hitters’ park. But Cincy gets a solid closer that knows NL Central opponents, and the signing keeps Cordero off of the Brewers’ and Astros’ rosters.
So now the Brewers are back to square one in finding a closer. I gotta believe that Derrick Turnbow will get a shot at the job in Maryvale, as should Guillermo Mota.
