Brewers beat themselves and a thank you to Kansas City

In their second of back-to-back intrasquad scrimmages, the “Home” Brewers beat the “Road” Brewers 10-4. Of note, Prince Fielder went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI. Tony Gwynn Jr. also drove in two runs and stole two bases as well. The Brewers will face the Oakland A’s on Thursday in their first Spring Training game of the year.
In other Brewers’ news, the team signed Carlos Villanueva for the 2008 season. Villanueva was Mr. Versatility for the pitching staff last season having spent significant time in the bullpen before finishing the season as a starter. Villanueva was 8-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 59 games (six starts). He will compete for a starting spot this season. Although he doesn’t have overpowering ‘stuff’, he has great command of all his pitches including a great change-up.
Ryan Braun will be the on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2008 Baseball Preview issue. Braun will share the cover with Rockies’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton. Here’s hoping the SI cover curse doesn’t hinder any of these young stars.
Lastly, I just wanted to say a quick thank you to those of you who responded with ideas for my upcoming trip to Kansas City. I appreciate the help and cannot wait to visit your city. In the coming days and weeks I want to share my love and passion for two of my favorite things: baseball and history. I want to educate those of you that are baseball fans but do not know some of the greatest history of the game: the Negro Leagues.
