For the fourth time this year, the Brewers went into extra innings. And, for the fourth time this year, they won the game.
Bill Hall doubled in two runs in the top of the 10th off David Weathers to break the 3-3 tie; Eric Gagne finished the inning and earned his 6th Save of the season. Hall went 2-for-5, and drove in another run earlier in the game for three total on the day.
Jeff Suppan was impressive–allowing only three hits and a walk through 6 2/3 IP; he got charged with 2 ER’s, but the second one scored on Reds’ first baseman Joey Votto’s 2-run homer off of reliever Brian Shouse. Reds’ starter Johnny Cueto was impressive, but Corey Hart was able to figure him out for his first home run of the season in the 2nd innning.
Perhaps the most unique part of this game was the amount of disputes over Hunter Wendelstedt’s calls of pitches on the first base side of the plate; first Reds’ catcher Paul Bako argued that one such pitch should have been a strike, and Bako got the boot’ later, Reds’ pinch hittter Ryan Freel felt a similar pitch called a strike was outside…Freel also got ejected; Hart also argued another pitch on the right side of the plate, but managed to keep his composure enough to avoid an ejection.
Also, besides being the third straight victory, the game also marked the second straight game where Hart was hitting 5th, ahead of Hall, who was moved back to 6th, as well as J.J. Hardy hitting in the #2 spot for injured outfielder Gabe Kapler.
Tomorrow is D-Day for deciding whether or not Yovani Gallardo will get the start, as well as which player gets taken off the 25-man roster…I’m still betting on Mitch Stetter getting returned to Nashville.
