The Milwaukee Brewers came from behind, then blew a lead and finally won the final game of their four game series against the Nationals on Monday, 4-3, in 11 innings. Carlos Villanueva pitched two scoreless innings in which he struck out five of the six batters he faced to pick up the win. Salmon Torres worked the eleventh inning to pick up his third save.
Ben Sheets started for the Crew and went six innings, only giving up two runs. He struck out six and walked none while giving up a home run. Sheets took the no decision and bounced back from a rough start. He gave up two runs in the first two innings, including a home run in the first to Cristian Guzman.
The top five in the lineup each had at least one hit on the game. Russell Branyan struggled, going 0-5 with four strikeouts. The team scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead before the Nationals tied it up on a controversial home run by Dmitri Young in the bottom of the eighth.
Gabe Kapler pinch-hit in the eleventh inning and knocked in Prince Fielder in what turned out to be the game-winning run.
The Brewers have no finished another disappointing road trip. Let’s recap: an ugly sweep in Boston, a hopeful series win in Pittsburgh and a terribly average split in Washington D.C. I have been as patient with Ned Yost as anyone I know but I finally think it’s time for him to go. This team has more problems than just their manager but it plays with no emotion and that comes from Ned and his poker face during every game.
