D-backs hurler Randy Johnson still looked like a lanky 23 year-old at the start of Tuesday night’s game, especially after getting Mike Cameron to fan to move ahead of Roger Clemens for second on the all-time strike out list…Brewers’ fans appreciated the mark by giving Johnson a standing ovation, to which Johnson commented:
“One thing I won’t forget in my career is the crowd. Walking off the mound to get a standing ovation like that, as a visiting player, that meant a lot. That’s pretty classy, and I won’t forget that.”
But Johnson proved that he was still human, allowing 2 ER’s on a Ryan Braun homer in the 6th, and another run in the 7th, as the Brewers went on to win their fifth straight game, 7-1, and collect their ninth win in their last eleven games.
Brewers’ starter Seth McClung kept the D-backs off the board until the D-backs manufactured a run in the fourth to take a1-0 lead. But that was all the D-backs would score, as McClung lasted 6 innings, allowing the 1 earned run on 6 hits and 0 walks, while fanning 4. Tim Dillard pitched a scoreless 7th, while southpaw Brian Shouse pitched the final two frames for the save.
Prince Fielder hit his 10th homer of the season in the 8th, while J.J. Hardy also hit a dinger, his 3rd of the year, en route to a 2-for-4 night with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s, while upping his BA to .250. McClung was the only other Brewer to get multiple hits on the night, amazing as he hit both off Johnson, he’s a left-handed hitter, and didn’t have to hit while in the AL with the Devil Rays from ’03 through the middle of last year.
The Brewers go for their second straight sweep Wednesday afternoon.
