The bats in Milwaukee are suddenly hot again. After five home runs on Wednesday night, the Crew hit four more on Thursday to win beat the Astros, 9-6 and win the series. The Brewers finished 3-3 on their road trip against the Rockies and Astros. If not for a Guillermo Mota meltdown last Friday, the Brewers would have a winning road trip.
Ben Sheets picked up the win to improve to 7-1 on the season and it appears that Sheets will be making a trip to New York for the All-Star game. Although Sheets gave up two home runs and three total runs, he struck out a season high nine batters in seven innings.
Guillermo Mota and Salomon Torres came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings respectively. Mota gave up two runs while Torres gave up one. Mota has had two bad outings in a week which isn’t a good sign. Torres was pitching in a non-save situation so I’m not too worried about the run he gave up.
Prince Fielder, Mike Cameron and Corey Hart all hit home runs in the second inning. Hart’s was a three-run shot and it was his third home run in the last two days. If Ned Yost takes Hart out of the lead-off spot when Rickie Weeks returns from the DL then Yost should be fired on the spot. Hart is simply ripping the cover off of the ball right now and is providing a major spark for the offense in the lead-off spot.
Gabe Kapler hit his fifth home run of the season in the ninth inning to provide a late insurance run. Since it is pretty obvious that Mike Cameron won’t be back next year, what are your thoughts on a Gabe Kapler/Tony Gwynn Jr. platoon in center field for 2009?
The Brewers return home for a 9-game interleague home stand starting with the Twins this weekend. Dave Bush will take on Kevin Slowey of the Twins at Miller Park Friday night.
