Brewers’ hurler Jeff Suppan cruised through the first two innings…and had a 2-0 cushion, at least for a little while.
But a two-run 3rd and a two-run 5th doomed “Soup” and the offense could do no more, and the Crew gave one to the Braves, 4-2.
The Brewers got things going in the top of the 3rd after Mike Cameron hit a bunt single and moved to second base on a throwing error by Braves’ pitcher Jorge Campillo. Mike Rivera, spelling the ice cold Jason Kendall, doubled, driving in Cameron. Suppan then sacrifice bunted Cameron to third, followed by Rickie Weeks doubling in Rivera.
But the Braves countered off Suppan in the same frame–first Campillo singled, as did outfielder Gregor Blanco. After Rubin Gotay flew out, second baseman Kelly Johnson doubled in Campillo and Blanco to tie the game at 2-2 (bias note: Kelly Johnson is the starting second baseman on my fantasy team, the first and only Brave to have that honor since Ted Turner signed away Greg Maddux from the Cubs). Johnson drove in Campillo in the 5th as well, giving the Braves the 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Weeks was the only Brewers with multiple hits on the day (bias note: I’d rather have had Weeks on my team…just because I like him).
The loss drops the Crew to 43-35 as they head off to Twinkie land.
