Ricky Bell. James Wilder. The Bucs were born to run, or so went that Bruce Springsteen song. They played it on the Tampa Stadium loudspeaker whenever Wilder would have a good run, and in 1984, that was a lot of times. In the beginning, Ricky Bell toted the rock for the Bucs in 1979 for the Bucs first 1,000 yard runner. Here we are 31 years later, and the latest 1,000 yard runner may be upon us.
Lars Tate. Reggie Cobb. LeGarrett Blount needs only 59 yards to get that goal, which is really remarkable considering he didnt start playing regularly until week 6 against the Rams. Now he is getting over 100 yards in two of the last three games and seems to be unstoppable. You cant hit him high, and you can’t tackle him low. He may leap right over you!
Errict Rhett. Mike Alstott. Blount is the league’s 16th leading rusher, but his 5.2 yards per carry average would put him closer to the top five. Next season, Blount will have the full 16 games to hop over people. But he’s not thinking about next year. The Bucs still arn’t finished with this season, having a chance, slim as it may be, to make it to the post season.
Warrick Dunn. Cadillac Williams. The Bucs owe it all to Blount, they were averaging a pedestrian 2.5 yards per carry with Carnell Williams before he took over. With Blount carrying the load, teams are not able to stack up the line like they could before, and this has helped Josh Freeman out immeasurably. You can bet Raheem Morris has a heavy dose of Blount ready for the Saints, and he will be ready to take his place on this list of C note carriers. First of many times too we hope.
