Sveum leaves Sabathia in too long; Brewers lose again

A 3-run 6th inning was enough for Cincy, as the Reds beat Milwaukee Saturday, 4-3.
The Brewers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th; CC Sabathia, pitching on 3 days rest, should have been on a short leash…but new Brewers’ manager Dale Sveum took a page out of the Ned Yost handbook and left his starter in too long–first Sabathia got behind 3-1 in the count to Joey Votto, who laced a fastball to left for a single; then, Andy Phillips drew a walk.

A Corey Patterson sac bunt misplayed by Prince Fielder loaded the bases…Sabathia proceeded to get the next two hitters out, before pinch hitter Micah Owings singled in a pair of runs. It was here that Sabathia should have been removed; instead, Adam Rosales singles in the eventual winning run.
Rickie Weeks’ 13th home run of the year to lead off the 9th cut the deficit to 4-3, and the Crew loaded the bases for Fielder, who struck out to strand the bases loaded…the Crew left 10 on base Saturday–8 of those in scoring position with 2 outs.
