The last meeting between the two division foes, the Brewers hope to build upon their 11-1 mark against the Pirates to gain ground in the NL Central Wild Card race; with the Mets’ loss to the Cubs Monday evening, the Brewers now trail the Mets by just 1 game in the race with 6 games remaining.
Pitching Probables:
Tuesday, September 23, 7:05 p.m. CT: RHP Jeff Karstens (2-6, 4.37) vs. RHP Dave Bush (9-10, 4.22)
Wednesday, September 24, 7:05 p.m. CT: LHP Paul Maholm (9-8, 3.68) vs. TBD
Thursday, September 25, 7:05 p.m. CT: LHP Zach Duke (5-14, 4.96) vs. TBD
Things to look for:
1. Brewers’ manager Dale Sveum will look to add some left-handed bats to his line-up Tuesday evening, including Craig Counsell at third base, and possibly even switch-hitter Ray Durham at second base, with an outside shot at Tony Gwynn, Jr., getting a start in center over the slumping Mike Cameron or in right for the slumping Corey Hart.
2. Look for Sveum not to mess much with the batting order from Sunday, as he seems to like to stick with his decisions (especially when the team won the previous time out).
3. Look for Yovani Gallardo to get the start Wednesday if the doctors’ clear him to play or CC Sabathia on three days rest (again).
4. Will Ben Sheets be healthy enough to pitch on Thursday? Or would Sveum prefer to save him for the Cubs’ series, as the Brewers’ playoff chances likely will still be up in the air come next Friday when the Cubs come to town.
