BREAKING NEWS: Melvin signed through 2012, Sveum out

Dale Sveum’s stint as the Brewers’ manager came to an abrupt end Friday evening when GM Doug Melvin informed him that he was no longer a candidate for the Brewers’ managerial post in 2009.

“Obviously, they want to find a more experienced manager,” Sveum stated.  Hitting coach Jim Skaalen also got the axe.

Names being tossed around on Tom Haudricourt’s article on JSOnline.com include former MLB managers Bob Brenly, Ken Macha, Jim Tracy, and Buck Showalter.  Macha has to be considered the front-runner, as he was offered the Brewers’ job before Yost in ’03, and eventually turned it down to manager the A’s to a number of winning seasons.  Haudricourt also noted that Willie Randolph, Davey Johnson, Mike Hargrove and Grady Little might get a look.

My take…Brenly seems too “Tom Trebelhorn” like, while Buck Showalter reminds me a bit too much of Ned Yost.  Macha or Davey Johnson are intriguing and would provide the most optimism for 2009.
