Bill Hall partially tore his left calf muscle on Thursday, working out on his own, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. An MRI Friday morning revealed the tear, and Hall is expected to miss 4-6 weeks–basically all of spring training–and is questionable for opening day.
The injury no doubt will give Mike Lamb, Mat Gamel, Casey McGehee, and Craig Counsell more playing time at third during Cactus League play…and will almost certainly push Hall into starting the season in the minors on a rehab stint. McGehee should benefit the most, as Lamb, Gamel, and Counsell all bat left-handed, while McGehee is the only other right-handed hitting third baseman besides Hall.
