For the third straight day, the Brewers’ right-handed heavy line-up got to see a lefty starter…this time, however, it was former teammate Dana Eveland. While Eveland kept the Crew in check, his stable mates did not, and the Crew finally earned its first Cactus League victory.
Manny Parra matched Eveland with two scoreless innings, each fanning a batter, and Mark DiFelice followed with two scoreless frames. Omar Aguilar, R.J. Swindle, and Chris Narveson then each tossed an inning, with Swindle and Narveson each surrendering a run, before Chase Wright gave up the final three runs, all earned, in the 8th and 9th innings.
The Crew pounded out 14 hits, including a 2-for-3 day by Craig Counsell, and a 2-run homer by Angel Salome. Trot Nixon’s chances of making the team was hampered by his 0-for-3 day, while Prince Fielder also went 0-for-3 and remains hitless in Cactus League action. Ken Macha had catcher Jason Kendall bat lead-off, with Chris Duffy getting the start in center and batting second; Kendall doubled in the 6th off A’s reliever Russ Springer, while Duffy doubled in the 9th off of Andrew Carignan en route to a 1-for-5 day. Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun got the day off.
The Crew is now 1-1-1 in Cactus League play, and host the Angels in Maryvale tomorrow.
