Seth McClung made things a bit too interesting by giving up a three-run homer to Edwin Encarnacion, but it was an otherwise easy win for the Brewers Thursday night in Cincinnati.
Prince Fielder showed no ill effects from winning the Home Run Derby, hitting a three-run homer of his own off the aptly named Homer Bailey. Braden Looper had a career night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with his 5th RBI of the season.
Looper continues to get some of the best run support in the league, but was unable to finish 6 innings tonight, giving way to Mark DiFelice, who went on to pitch 1.2 innings in relief. McClung followed DiFelice out of the bullpen, and struggled mightily with his control, walking two batters before surrendering the upper deck shot to EE.
A bit of controversy followed, as Ken Macha was preparing to take McClung out of the game following the home run. Macha took his time getting up the steps, hoping to give Todd Coffey more time to warm up. McClung “quick pitched” Macha, throwing a pitch before the manager was able to step onto the field. He finished pitching the AB, forcing a flyout to centerfield, before Macha gave him the hook. It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes from the incident.
Coffey and Trevor Hoffman were able to close the game out without any further drama, moving the Brewers within two games of the division-leading Cardinals. The Brewers now lead the season series 6-3, and also take a 94-93 lead in the all-time series.
