The offense finally broke out of its funk, getting 4 RBI from Ryan
Braun (2-5, 2B, HR) and 2 RBI from Casey McGehee (2-5, HR). The
pitching combo of Jeff Suppan and Seth McClung was less fearsome,
though, surrendering a combined 7 earned runs and 9 hits in 5 innings.
Todd Coffey, Mark DiFelice, and Mitch Stetter were able to keep the
Bucs scoreless through 8 innings, and Mike Cameron hit a one-out triple
in the Brewers’ half of the 9th inning.
Ryan Braun was unable to deliver a 5th RBI, striking out just trying to
make contact on a half-hearted swing. Prince Fielder was intentionally
walked, and Casey McGehee struck out to end the inning. Following the
wasted opportunity, Brandon Moss hit a walkoff home run off Stetter to
lead off the bottom of the 9th.
The Brewers end a very winnable road trip through Cincinnati and
Pittsburgh with a 3-4 record, and now trail the Cardinals by 2.5 games
in the NL Central. St. Louis finishes their series with Houston
tonight.
The Brewers are by no means out of the race in a very mediocre division, but losses like this tend to sting a bit.
