Sunday’s blowout loss to the Braves means that the Brewers haven’t won a Sunday game in eight weeks. Amazingly, the team remains only a few games out of first place in the NL Central.
Starter Braden Looper was solid through the first 5 innings, but imploded in the 6th, giving up 4 runs — including a 3-run home run to Casey Kotchman. The bullpen wouldn’t provide much help in keeping the Brewers in the game, either, with Mark DiFelice, Mike Burns, and Chris Smith all giving up runs in the 10-2 loss.
The Brewers were able to bang out 10 hits — 9 of them against Braves starter Derek Lowe — but were only able to score two runs, thanks to a 2-run homer by Corey Hart in the bottom of the 6th.
Perhaps the most maddening thing about today’s game was how much damage the Braves were able to do with 2 outs. Both of Brian McCann’s RBI — a double in the 1st and a homer in the 7th — came with two outs, as did Kelly Johnson’s 9th inning 2-run homer.
Luckily, the Nationals are coming to town starting Monday night. The only question, though, is if the Brewers can take advantage of the weak patch in their schedule. So far, they haven’t, going just 4-6 since the All-Star break.
