As announced during the Brewers’ 2-0 loss in Houston yesterday, the Brewers have acquired another former pitcher, getting Cincinnati’s David Weathers for a player to be named later. Weathers has been surprisingly good for the Reds this season and could fill that crucial 7th inning spot Ken Macha has been looking to fill in order to get more leads to Todd Coffey and Trevor Hoffman. To this point, Weathers has compiled a 3-3 record and 3.32 ERA setting up Francisco Cordero, with a WHIP of just 1.16.
As some Brewers fans may remember, Weathers used to pitch for the Brewers in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and was a fairly solid reliever then, too. That was over 10 years ago, however, and you have to wonder if the Brewers may have given up too much for a guy who may only be on the team for a couple months while the team is starting to fall out of contention. Perhaps it’s one of those deals where the player the Reds get in return depends on how well the team does at the end of the year. In either case, it doesn’t seem like the price will be too high.
It’s not necessarily a rental, either, as Weathers has a team option for 2010. The only issue is that it appears Weathers’ 2010 option would cost the team close to $4 million, and considering the team is already saddled with the bad contracts of Bill Hall and Jeff Suppan for next season, that might be too much to pay for a 40-year old middle reliever (especially if the Brewers are going to set out to improve the starting pitching and catching situations).
As Brew Crew Ball points out, Weathers will be the 21st pitcher to throw a pitch for the Brewers once he appears in a game, presumably sometime in the next few days. Hopefully the additions of Jesus Colome and Weathers will go a long way towards not having to see the likes of Chris Smith pitch meaningful innings anymore.
