Brewers’ Melvin makes two quick decisions

I’ve been meaning to write a post on the “Top Ten” decisions that Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin will need to make before heading off to Arizona in February. Trouble is…he’s already made two of them (both of which would have fallen in the middle of my list): 1. Closer Trevor Hoffman has already been re-signed as a free agent for the 2010 season, and 2. Rick Peterson was hired to be the new pitching coach. Peterson should be a good choice, at least in the sense that both manager Ken Macha and bench coach Willie Randolph have had Peterson as their pitching coach as managers in Oakland and in New York, respectively. Oh…a third decision was also made–to bring back bullpen coach Stan Kyles (a fourth was to offer Chris Bosio a position in the organization–likely his old job as the pitching coach for AAA Nashville). I don’t know enough about Kyles, but hope that Peterson is familiar with him…as Peterson will probably have to send a few starters from ’09 there and Kyles will have to motivate these former starters in their new roles as relievers. Anyway…these are just the first steps in re-vamping the squad for 2010.
