Brewers add Zaun as backstop…why? Here’s why…

Never mind he’s 38 years old. Never mind he only played 90 games last year. Never mind he only hit .260. So why’d the Brewers sign former Blue Jay/Oriole/Devil Ray Gregg Zaun to be a catcher for 2010? He’s a switch-hitter. One that hit .268 against righties (batting lefty), including all 8 of his HR’s. And, unless Mat Gamel somehow beats out Casey McGehee at third, Zaun will join Prince Fielder as the only left-handed hitter in a league full of righty starters…and even more full of righty relievers. This will also give new pitching coach Rick Peterson an open minded catcher–one that will have had no experience and prejudices towards returning pitchers. It will also give Jonathan Lucroy a chance to blossom at AAA Nashville in 2010…and fans one more reason to check out “re-vamped” 2010 Brewers.
