Think the Brewers finally have a steady starting rotation that’s starting to produce without fear of being jerked around? Think again!
Dave Bush was supposed to pitch against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, but Adam McCalvy is reporting that Bush won’t be making that start. That’s because Ken Macha is skipping Bush’s spot in the rotation to “get everybody in a position where they have the highest likelihood of succeeding.”
In other words, thanks for that great start against the Angels, Dave, but we’re benching you because you stunk against the Twins the last time you faced them. Go ahead and pitch against the Mariners because, hell, Jeff Suppan managed to get decent results in 4 innings against them.
Was Bush horrible against the Twins on May 21? He sure was. It was the worst start by a Brewer since Ben Hendrickson torpedoed his career in 2006. But does Macha really think Chris Narveson will fare much better? This move brings back memories of Ned Yost’s infamous home/road pitching platoon with Bush and Seth McClung.
I can understand trying to set your players up for success, but you can’t keep yanking Bush around and expect him to produce. It’s a minor miracle he’s pitched as well as he has since the last time Macha temporarily took him out of the rotation. It’s stuff like this that makes me nervous for Doug Davis’ return. Macha’s shown absolutely no patience when it comes to the rotation, despite the fact that the starters have fared better than they have all year the past couple weeks when they’ve been able to pitched without worrying that it’s their last start.
