We’re nearing the final few hours before the non-waiver trade deadline, and it doesn’t look like the Brewers will do much of anything. Depending on who you ask, we already knew that Corey Hart and Prince Fielder weren’t going to get moved today — Keith Law’s sources were saying that the two were off the market days ago, while Gord Ash said last night that he doesn’t see a major trade happening, but they certainly haven’t packed up yet.
That doesn’t mean that a minor deal still can’t go down, though. Adam McCalvy noted that there were rumors about the Red Sox being interested in Jim Edmonds, but Doug Melvin has promised Edmonds that he’d okay a deal with him before finally pulling the trigger. With that said, even things with Edmonds have seemed quiet this morning, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweeted that the Brewers don’t plan on making a move.
The rest of the division seems to be keeping busy, though. The Cardinals have added Jake Westbrook, which would presumably achieve the goal of getting Jeff Suppan out of the rotation. The Cubs may be sending Ted Lilly to the Dodgers, with Ryan Theriot possible going with him. The Pirates even made a move, essentially sending scraps to the D’Backs for Chris Snyder.
It’d be nice to see the Brewers make a move, just so we have something to talk about for a couple days, but at the same time I agree with what Gord Ash said on Brewers Live last night — there’s really no reason to make a move just for the sake of making a move, especially when you’d probably be giving Edmonds or someone else away for “just a guy” in A-ball.
