I know the above picture is from the Reds series, but it’s pretty much how I feel about watching this team right now.
Last week, things were looking pretty good. Not great, mind you — the Brewers were still 8 games back in the NL Central race — but still good considering they were on a season-high 5-game winning streak.
One week later, they’re on a five-game losing streak in which they’ve been outscored 38-8, falling to 11.5 games back. Jordan Schelling of MLB.com said it best when he said that the 7th inning of Sunday’s game was the 2010 season in a nutshell:
This inning is not unlike the #Brewers season as a whole. Just when things are going right, they go wrong, and fast.
The Brewers had just taken a 2-0 lead the inning before. Randy Wolf was pitching a gem, and had a legitimate chance at a complete game shutout with the way he was pitching. And then it all fell apart — Wolf was hit by a line drive and had to leave the game, Kameron Loe came in and walked the bases loaded while looking like he never quite warmed up, and Zach Braddock surrendered a cheap pop fly grand slam to Jason Michaels that landed in the Crawford Boxes.
Schelling has a point about this Brewers season — every time it seems like they’re gaining steam, they get stomach punched and fall back to where they started.
Start the season by taking 2 of 3 from a good Rockies team, respond by having Trevor Hoffman melt down in the following series against St. Louis.
Sweep the Pirates with a combined score of 36-1? Score 4 runs while getting swept by the Cubs in the next series.
Start May with a record of 6-2? Respond by losing 11 of 12.
Now losers of five straight games, they’re right back to where they were 11 days ago. I know any hope of this team playing meaningful baseball is lost, but at this point, I’d settle for consistent baseball.
