There are a lot of good bloggers out there, and just because they don’t write about the Brewers doesn’t mean they’re not putting up great, thoughtful posts. These were some of my favorite posts from other NL Central bloggers over the past week.
– I love it when the St. Louis Cardinals are exposed as anything less than the Protectors of Baseball Tradition they make themselves out to be. That’s probably why I loved this column by Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post. Renck has had just about enough of Carpenter pretending to know everything about everything, and chronicles a few examples of the hotheaded right hander being a general pain in the ass. Personally, I think Carpenter’s a great pitcher, but he’s nearing Carlos Zamrano territory for me as far as least-liked players go (h/t Astros County, who has the appropriate title for this article).
– Former Brewer Greg Vaughn’s son Cory was a 4th round pick by the New York Mets in this year’s draft. His pro career is off to an incredible start, and Baseball Digest has a nice piece about him.
– The big news in the division this past week was the series between the Cards and Reds, and the (incredibly awesome) comments by Brandon Phillips heading into it. Pitchers Hit Eighth noticed that Tony La Russa managed this series unlike any other during his tenure in St. Louis, and had a response for Mr. Phillips.
– Of course, Phillips’ comments touched off a huge brawl in game two of the series. The Outfield Ivy has some quotes following the now-famous brawl. Brandon Phillips says everyone respects him after his initial comments, and Bronson Arroyo compares Phillips to another Cincinnati loudmouth that everyone either loves or hates.
– We talked about the Jim Edmonds trade earlier this week, and Bullpen Brian has another take. He notes that Cincinnati will be Edmonds’ 4th NL Central team, and compares the outfielder’s travels to those of another former Brewer — John Vander Wal.
– Edmonds becomes the latest ex-Cardinal to join the Reds. In case you haven’t noticed, Walt Jocketty has quite the collection of former redbirds in Cincinnati, but the Cards also have their fair share of former Reds. Fungoes compares the two teams and tries to determine whose players have contributed more to their new team’s success.
– You’d think trading two of the faces of your franchise would have a negative effect on home attendance, but that hasn’t been the case in Houston. Astros County notes that the numbers have actually been up in Houston after the trades of Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt. For some reason, I don’t think that would be the case in Milwaukee if the Brewers traded Prince Fielder and Yovani Gallardo on the same day. Kudos to the fans in Houston, who always seem to be some of the most supportive in the division.
– WHYGAVS notes that the Bucs aren’t the only team sweating about their top picks not being signed heading into Monday’s deadline, and gives Pittsburgh fans a reason to remain calm. I really liked this year’s draft for the Pirates…if they can get both Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie signed, it’ll be another step in the right direction for the Pirates.
