I don’t know if he was ever seriously considered a top candidate for the Brewers’ managing job, but Pat Listach says he was told he is not one of the team’s “Final Four” candidates. Looks like I guessed wrong.
This news (reported by Tom Haudricourt) is neither surprising nor disheartening, even if I guessed he was one of the Final Four just because he was one of a handful of names we actually knew. Despite the fact that he felt very good about his interview, he always seemed to be a secondary candidate — a “due diligence” guy who made the interview rounds in multiple places (Chicago, Toronto) but was never seriously considered anywhere. He could be a manager some day, but I’d be willing to bet his first job comes on an interim basis when someone else gets fired. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I just don’t seem him beating out some of the other hotshot names out there during a winter interview process.
Until then, I think Listach will continue to be more known for his part in this incident (around the :05 mark) than as a true managerial prospect:
