Trevor Hoffman couldn’t find a job to his liking, so he retired. Jeff Suppan, meanwhile, is expected to sign a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants with an invite to spring training. According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, Suppan will make $1 million if he makes the major league roster, and has an out clause if he’s not added to the roster by the end of March. Essentially, if he doesn’t make the team out of camp, he can become a free agent again.
Needless to say, I’m baffled he keeps getting opportunities. He finished last season with a FIP of 4.89, but it was the first time he posted a FIP below 5.00 since 2007. At least the Giants won’t be paying very much for a replacement level pitcher, but at the same time, there has to be a younger option for them with more upside. At least by signing the 36-year old Suppan, they’re probably decreasing the average age of the team (#jokesfrom2006).
