Brewers’ 25-Man Roster Takes Shape

The 25-man roster isn’t finalized quite yet, but it appears things on the position player side are set. After trading for Nyjer Morgan this morning, Brandon Boggs was waived and Luis Cruz was outrighted to Nashville. It appears Jeremy Reed and Erick Almonte have made the 25-man roster.

With that in mind, here are your 13 Opening Day position players, assuming Lucroy and Hart start on the DL:

C
George Kottaras
Wil Nieves

INF
Prince Fielder
Rickie Weeks
Yuniesky Betancourt
Casey McGehee
Craig Counsell
Erick Almonte

OF
Ryan Braun
Carlos Gomez
Mark Kotsay
Nyjer Morgan
Jeremy Reed

The 12 pitchers aren’t set in stone yet, but it looks like we may be getting close. Justin James was optioned to Triple A today, and Mark DiFelice was sent down on Saturday. If I had to guess, though, this is how I would guess things will look on Thursday:

SP
Yovani Gallardo
Shaun Marcum
Randy Wolf
Chris Narveson

RP
John Axford
Takashi Saito
Kameron Loe
Zach Braddock
Mitch Stetter
Sergio Mitre
Sean Green
Brandon Kintzler

Marco Estrada will still likely make the necessary spot starts, but the Brewers would be smart to hold off on adding Estrada to the 40-man roster until the first day he’s needed. At that point, room on the 40-man will have to be made, and someone will be optioned down to Nashville.

With five guys starting the year on the DL, this isn’t quite the roster we expected to see when camp first started, but it’s still one that should be competitive in April while injuries heal.

UPDATE: Looks like these are your 25, according to Tom Haudricourt. Aside from some (ultimately small) disagreements with the bench spots, the roster looks pretty good considering everything the team went through this spring.
