A day after losing Luis Cruz when he unexpectedly chose free agency over accepting an assignment to Nashville, the Brewers got a bit of good news — Brandon Boggs went unclaimed on waivers. It’s no guarantee he stays — he has until Wednesday to make the same choice Cruz did — but it is good news that the Brewers were able to sneak him through to begin with.
Right now no one seems to know whether or not Boggs will accept assignment, but Adam McCalvy seems optimistic. It would make me feel better about the Brewers’ outfield depth if he did decide to stay, especially since switch-hitting outfielders with some patience at the plate and solid defensive chops seem to be pretty hard to find. That’s why I’m at least mildly surprised he was able to get through waivers.
Of course, this entire situation could have been avoided (at least for the time being) by keeping Boggs on the active roster for Opening Day and returning non-roster player Jeremy Reed to minor league camp. Alternatively, the Brewers also could have passed up on signing Mark Kotsay and kept both until Corey Hart‘s return. Keeping Reed over Boggs was ridiculous, but ultimately keeping Kotsay over both will be insanity.
