Jeremy Reed was shipped off to Minnesota for “future considerations” on Thursday, removing one piece of rotten wood from the outfield logjam in Nashville. Thanks for the memories, Jeremy. We’ll always remember the time we got upset that you made the Opening Day roster over Brandon Boggs.
Just a few random thoughts on the news:
– We should probably stop being surprised every time Boggs makes it through waivers — it doesn’t seem like any other organization values him all that highly, either. You would think he’d be a more attractive trade option for someone like the Twins, who are looking for some outfield depth and could use a switch hitter with some home run power. Perhaps they think Reed can be the better defender, or maybe he was just cheaper to acquire in a trade for AAA depth.
– There’s still roughly 8000 outfielders on the Nashville roster, but perhaps there will soon be a spot for Erik Komatsu, who has been dominating Huntsville in his age 23 season. Through 46 games, the 2010 Brewers Minor League Player of the Year is hitting .321/.413/.434. He may not be a great defender in center, but if he can keep getting on base like he has been (career MiLB OBP of .402 in 4 seasons), he can be a valuable piece on the 25-man roster someday.
– It’s never too early to start hoping that Reed finds his way to the Major Leagues by the time the Brewers start their Interleague series with the Twins. Come on, Gardy. You know you need more grit in that lineup.
