We’re a little late to the party here, but this is still pretty cool. If you haven’t seen it already on Deadspin or Bloguin’s Outside Corner, sixteen-year old Curt Hogg posted this on his blog a couple weeks ago:
“An anonymous source has reported to Plushdamentals that Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun’s drug test that tested positive for increased levels of synthetic testosterone was mishandled, thus likely altering the results of the test. The report exclusively reached Plushdamentals through a source familiar with a former college teammate of Braun’s at the University of Miami and reportedly has knowledge of the situation.”
Now, in the past few days, it has just come out that Braun’s sample was mishandled, it likely altered the results of the test, and Braun was ruled not guilty on the strength of this information.
Yes, you can argue that Hogg could have done more to check his information, or make fun of him because he once wrote for Bleacher Report (or, if you’re an established dinosaur, get in one final parent’s basement joke), but there’s no denying that the guy scooped everyone by nine days on this story, or that his source was unequivocally correct. Also, like Braun, Hogg acted with a professionalism that belied his age throughout the whole process, and we commend him for that, too. There are a lot of people who could learn from this kid: From the guy who was first to report that Yu Darvish was going to become a Blue Jay, to those weird “MLB Insider” twitter guys, to everyone that ever aspires to be a journalist and wants to see how things should be done.
It feels a little weird congratulating somebody for them making it onto Deadspin, but in this case, it’s more than deserved. Congrats to Curt, and best of luck in the future: We’ll be reading.
