The Brewers made the first reductions to their Spring Training roster today, cutting five players from major-league camp, according to Media Relations Director Mike Vassallo. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann, lefty Jed Bradley, and catcher Anderson De La Rosa have all been reassigned to minor-league camp, and righty Cody Scarpetta and outfielder/living legend Brock Kjeldgaard were optioned to Double-A Huntsville, and will head to minor-league Spring Training as well.
There aren’t any surprises here, nor should any of these cuts be a severe letdown for anyone. Jungmann and Bradley are both yet to pitch an inning of pro ball, and it was well-known that they would both head to High-A Brevard County to start this year, no matter what they did in big-league camp. De La Rosa wasn’t in contention for any kind of major-league role (At best, he’d probably be the organization’s fifth-best in-house option); He was just around because Spring Training requires a lot of catchers. Scarpetta wasn’t at all expected to break camp with the big-league club either, and Kjeldgaard isn’t near major-league ready and will likely start the season in AA or AAA. In all honesty, it was probably inevitable that all these guys were going to be reassigned, and sooner rather than later.
That doesn’t mean that we won’t see any of them in Milwaukee soon, though. It’s certainly possible that Scarpetta could reach the majors as a reliever, and while Jungmann and Bradley aren’t likely to rocket through the system unless a breakout occurs or an extreme need arises, stranger things have also happened. Also, though Kjeldgaard doesn’t figure to see major-league time this year, he’ll likely remain a cult-like figure among people who cover the organization, which has to count for something.
