On a day when Yovani Gallardo was officially announced as the Opening Day starter for Milwaukee it was Zack Greinke and a huge offensive explosion to take care of the Diamondbacks in a 7-1 win that took the headlines. The Brewers and Diamondbacks were tied at 1 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning and the Brewers bats came alive for 6 runs to put this game out of reach.
Zack Greinke earned his first win of the Spring and the Brewers improve to 11-13-2 overall in Spring Training. Greinke also improved his Spring ERA to just 0.99.
The Brewers have won four of their last five games as they ramp up towards Opening Day.
On a side note Logan Schafer and Caleb Gindl were optioned to Triple A today. The moves were more about not having the room on the roster than anything they did or didn’t do in Spring Training and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see Schafer get called up if Corey Hart isn’t able to go right out of the gate.
Let’s get to the highlights and thankfully no lowlights:
– Jonathan Lucroy continued his impressive Spring with another amazing performance today. He went 3-4 with a home run and 3 RBI’s. In fact Lucroy was just a triple away from the cycle in this game. Ya, that’s right – a catcher was a triple away from the cycle. With another great day his average improved to .513 this Spring.
– The fifth inning was totally crazy. Milwaukee batted around and every one of the nine got a hit and there was also a walk added to the mix. Greinke, who prides himself on his hitting, helped his cause with a RBI double. Lucroy hit a two run home run in this inning as well.
– Greinke’s line – 7 innings pitched, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 strike outs. Greinke now has 23 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched this Spring and should make one more start before his debut on April 7th.
– Shortstop Alex Gonzalez had a great day as well, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s to up his total to 11RBI’s for the Spring.
Up next for the Brewers is a 3:05pm Central game tomorrow against their Central Division foes in the Cincinnati Reds at Maryvale Baseball Park.
