If you were to tell me that Shaun Marcum would throw 7 innings of scoreless baseball, I’d assume the Brewers would win that game, but that wasn’t to be the case on Tuesday night as the San Diego Padres blanked Milwaukee for a 2-0 win. The loss drops the Brewers record 11-13 on the year.
The game entered the bottom of the 8th inning at 0-0, but after K-Rod allowed the lead-off runner on former Brewer Mark Kotsay delivered the knock out punch in the form of a 2 run home run that proved to be too much for the Brewers to come back from.
Marcum had his best outing of the year, but didn’t factor into the decision as Francisco Rodriguez continued to struggle in his role as set-up man. His record now stands at 0-3 on the season and his ERA moved up to 6.57.
Of course it’s not all Rodriguez’s falt, after all the Milwaukee hitters couldn’t muster up but three hits on the night to spoil a great pitching performance. It may be a cliche, but neither Marcum, nor Edinson Volquez deserved a loss in the game. As it stood neither won or loss as they both took no decisions despite amazing performances. They were so closely matched that their lines are nearly identical.

Notes:
– Braun, Hart, and Gonzalez accounted for one hit a piece and thus the Brewers total of three hits on the night. I guess it’s a plus that three of the Brewers best hitters got the hits, but seriously it’s getting a bit ridiculous that no one else outside of Gamel and/or the catchers are capable of picking up a bit of slack offensively.
– Marcum only allowed one hit after giving up two in the opening inning against the Padres.
– The Brewers managed to spoil the best outing from Marcum since last Sept. 4th when he went 7 innings and gave up just one hit and one walk to earn the win over the Houston Astros.
– Padres closer Houston Street earned his 4th save of the year already and recorded 2K’s in getting the save in the 9th inning.
– Perhaps the biggest negative of the game was an injury that forced Mat Gamel out of the game with a twisted knee & we won’t know more until further examination on it tomorrow. He didn’t even get an at-bat in the game.
– On a side note (h/t to Mike Vassallo) the Brewers will skip Marco Estrada’s spot in the rotation with the off day on Thursday. It’s not really all that surprising since they did the exact same thing last week.
Tomorrow’s game will be a mid-afternoon affair with first pitch scheduled for 5:35pm Central Time and will be aired on FSNWisconsin.
