The Brewers’ rotation hasn’t exactly impressed since Zack Greinke’s departure, but at least some help is on the way. Right-hander Shaun Marcum, who has been out since mid-June with tightness in his elbow, threw a successful simulated game today and will hopefully be ready for a rehab outing sometime later this week.
The circumstances surrounding Marcum’s injury were – and still are – somewhat murky. He initially hoped to miss only one start, but the seemingly minor elbow issues turned into another missed start, then a stint on the 15-day DL, and finally, a trip to the 60-day DL. News about him has been sparse, but all signs point to Marcum slowly being on the mend, throwing a bullpen session last Wednesday and a simulated game today. Hopefully, he will be able to return as soon as he is eligible, which would be August 14 (a week from Tuesday).
When Marcum returns, he apparently is going to replace Mark Rogers in the rotation. There is a definite possibility that he still might be traded between now and August 31. However, considering the way the Brewers approached the non-waiver deadline, it’s also possible that they hold on to him in hopes of signing him this winter, maybe through a $13-14MM qualifying offer and maybe to a longer-term deal. That’s a whole other article, though, and the club hasn’t tipped their hand as to what they plan to do.
