Bring Asomugha Home

Bring Asomugha HomeWith the Buccaneers 2011 Draft over, and the CBA situation up in the air, its now a boring time in football land.

Just because the league and its players cant get their stuff together, doesnt mean that we cant discuss the future of this young Buccaneer football team.

As of right now, the Bucs 2011 draft has to be considered an success. When you are able to get Adrian Clayborn, Da’Quan Bowers, and Mason Foster all in the same draft without trading up once, that’s impressive.

If Bowers, Clayborn, Price, and McCoy can play to their potential, Tampa will easily have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL for years to come.

The defense made huge strides on draft weekend, but why stop there? Defense wins championships and the more pieces you have on the defense, the easier it is to win. One piece that I and I’m sure other Buc fans would like to add is former Raider CB, Nnamdi Asomugha.

If you look at Asomugha’s stats, you wouldn’t tell that hes an elite corner with a pedestrian 11 ints in a 9 year career, but the truth of the matter is that hes the best corner in the NFL behind the Jets, Darrelle Revis.

A physically imposing corner at 6’2” 210, Nnamdi would give the Bucs defense a lot of flexibility in the secondary and would truly benefit from the pressure that will be caused by McCoy, Price, Clayborn, and Bowers.  Nnamdi is at his best in man to man coverage, so I could see Morris drawing up a lot of man-zone coverages and put Asomugha in position to be the opposing teams best receiver’s personal shadow.

Signing Asomugha would also fill a hole if Aqib Talib is found guilty of his deadly weapon charge. The team does have 2 young, rising corner backs in Myron Lewis and E.J. Biggers that they are excited about, but the truth is that Talib is an elite corner and adding Nnamdi would make the team and the fans forget about Talib, who can not be trusted to stay in line. Nnamdi also would fit in perfectly with Dominik and Morris because he is a high character guy and would be able to help Ronde Barber mentor the young defensive backs that the Bucs have.

In my opinion, this team is ready to win now because Josh Freeman is ready to win now. Josh’s development has fast-foward the process of being ready to contend in half and I believe that Dominik and Morris feel the same way.

With the 2011 draft class and the possible addition of Asomugha, the Bucs have a major chance to be a special team in 2011. Lets take advantage of it. Sign Asomugha and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Tampa where it belongs.
