No Hard Knocks for the Buccaneers this season. According to reports, the Buccaneers have declined HBO’s invitation to be on the show that features an NFL team through training camp.
Hard Knocks is a popular show that has featured other NFL teams like the Cowboys, Bengals, Chiefs, and of course, the Jets. While it is huge for exposure and popularity around the world, it can also be an distraction and can start internal jealousy among players. This is more of a distraction issue than any thing else with this team, the Bucs are loaded with team first guys, so internal fighting wouldn’t be the problem.
With the Bucs having so many young players, it was wise to say no to Hard Knocks. The more focus that can be put to getting better for the 2011 season, especially with the lockout going on, the better off the Bucs will be.
National exposure is great, but not for the risk of the season. When the Bucs do get the exposure they deserve, its going to be because of what they are doing on the field in terms of winning, than that of an HBO reality show.
Other Buc fans may be disappointed by the organizations decision, but in the grand scheme of things, Tampa is better off without that type of exposure and should be encouraged by the “eye on the prize” mentality that this team has formed over the last couple of seasons.
