Todays feature is a Video of the Day that reminds us the NFL is made up of all kinds of people. Superstars, and little known guys who barely made it. Sometimes those little knowns make a play or have an event happen to them that they never forget, a story for the grandkids.
The star in the story is Eventual Hall of Famer Steve Young, mostly in the hall, ok, 100% of which is in the hall because of his San Francisco days! But he was a Tampa Bay Quarterback first!
Back in the early 80s you had the USFL who played football games in the spring time, but they stole a lot of NFL talent and took guys right out of college. Hershel Walker was one of the biggest names to go from Georgia to the New Jersey Devils. Tampa Bay had a team called the Tampa Bay Bandits, and it was the first head coaching job for Steve Spurrier.
In 1985 the USFL folded, and the NFL had a draft to pick players. Steve Young went from BYU to the Los Angeles Express. The Bucs picked him and he started playing games in 1985 for the Bucs when they quickly became a losing team.
In 1986, after a 2-14 season the year before, and with only a 2-14 season on its way the same year, the Bucs cut three big player names, two of which were synonymous with the organizations heyday. Jimmie Giles and Kevin House were both cut. SO was Ron Springs, who signed from Dallas a year or so before.
The Detroit Lions were dominating the Bucs, but Tampa Bay got a garbage TD towards the end of the game, that is when little known Pat Franklin makes this one handed catch from a future hall of famer for the ages.
And the Grand Kids!
