To no surprise, East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden and Memphis linebacker Tank Jakes headline the first annual AACFootballFever.com midseason All-American Athletic Conference team.
Carden, who ranks No. 13 in the NCAA with a 78.3 Total QBR (No. 1 among active non-Power 5 quarterbacks), leads an explosive ECU offense that ranks No. 5 in passing yards (371.3 ypg) and No. 15 in scoring (41.0). The Pirates have claimed all rights to the state of North Carolina (and South Carolina, for that matter) and are the undisputed favorite to win the AAC in their first season coming from Conference USA.
Jakes is the senior leader on a Memphis defensive unit that has excelled in the trenches this season, where it makes its money blowing plays up in the backfield. The Tigers lead The American in tackles for loss (47.0), and Jakes alone has accounted for over 25 percent of them. He ‘s also the conference’s sack leader (6.0) and has 24 more solo tackles than he does assists (12).
East Carolina and Central Florida are tied with the most players on the first team with five each. South Florida was next with four, and both Temple and Houston provided three of their own. SMU was the only team to not have a player on the list.
The midseason All-AAC team was selected by over 10 members of AACFootballFever.com’s staff.
