In a strange development, a game between the Orioles and White Sox in Baltimore will be played Wednesday afternoon at Camden Yards but will be closed to the public per a Deadspin report.
Monday’s and Tuesday’s games have already been postponed, to be made up later as part of a doubleheader. The Orioles’ next series has been moved to Tropicana Field, home of the Rays.
All of this, of course, is due to a chaotic situation in Baltimore that has seen rioters loot, burn and vandalize buildings and cars, attack police and cause enough trouble to lead to a curfew and school closings, among other terrible consequences.
It’s a grim and complicated, to be sure. An illustration from the sports world of the unfortunate situation will be a closed-door MLB game, a bizarre spectacle that hopefully will be televised for posterity.
The clank of baseballs hitting an empty stadium and the silence of virtually no observers will be a stark reminder of the unsettled tension in Baltimore and elsewhere in our country. There are no simple solutions, but hopefully people can come together to create a better future.
At a time like this, the Brewers’ woes seem incredibly meaningless.
