As promised, here is some Josh Freeman audio courtesy of 620 WDAE as heard on the Big Dog’s 3pm show. Duemig always gets the good interviews, and here is the audio from their podcast.
You can just tell the Bucs were excited seeing each other again; it was like a family reunion, most of the players havn’t seen each other since they stepped off the carpet at the SuperDome waiting to find out if there were going to play another game again.
“I can’t speak for everyone else but it’s my first time getting in a 3 point stance” said Bucs left tackle Donald Penn, who is a tad bit heavier than last season, but nowhere near the size he bulked up to before.
Almost all the Bucs were here, notable absentees were Ronde Barber, Cadillac Williams, Barrett Ruud, Dezmon Briscoe and rookies DaQuan Bowers, And Tight Ends Luke Stocker and Daniel Hardy. It should be pointed out these are entirely voluntary and are going on for three days. Several of these players may show up today (Wednesday). Josh Freeman has said a few players told him they wont make every session but will be there, so we shall see, stay tuned.
It was especially nice to see last years injured reserve players running around, Gerald McCoy,Quincy Black, Cody Grimm, Davin Joeseph and Aqib Talib were are running around despite finishing 2010 on IR. Grimm was less active than the rest.
Fellow IR mates Brandon Gilbeaux, Brian Price, and Kareem Huggins were out of the practices, but you could never tell they were on IR judging from the way they looked. No one was on crutches, or limping at all. It was just precautionary.
Speaking of injuries, we all know Kellen Winslow JR has a bad knee, well he is NOT having surgery this offseason. He feels that part of the treatment is done with, all particles have been removed, and he just needs to keep the knee strong and fit. Arrelious Benn was seriously hurt towards the end of 2010 and his return was in doubt. He seems to be WAY ahead of schedule on his rehab.
It can take 8-12 months for his injury to heal, but in 7 months he’s running on it.
“I’m past where I should be…I’m where I want to be. I definitely envision me being full strength and full tilt for training camp”. That is great news.
On a comic moment, Donald Penn, probably the left tackle for the Bucs for at least 5-8 more years, met Adrian Clayborn, the DE for the next 8 years that he will be going up against in practice every year until then. It’s how it happened that was funny. According to Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report, Clayborn asked Penn, “Whose the left tackle?” to which he replied “It’s me. Don’t worry, I’ll get you right”.
Get him right Penn, we need another Simeon Rice or Lee Roy Selmon, the only two real edge rushers Tampa Bay has ever had. (All due respect to Greg “The Crane” Spires, who wasn’t half bad coming off the left).
