It was a busy week in Free Agency, with the biggest news involving Dwight Howard’s move to Houston. His signing, along with Iguodala’s in Golden State, will have major implications on the rest of the league, particularly on lottery teams. Below is a list of free agent signings on lottery teams.
Cleveland
- Signed Earl Clark to a 2 year, $9 million dollar deal. Clark was one of the few positives on the Lakers last season, and should provide good wing play off the bench.
- Signed Jarrett Jack to a 4 year, $25.2 million dollar deal. Cleveland now has a strong backup point guard for Kyrie Irving, and one who could play alongside Irving if needed.
Charlotte
- As we reported, Charlotte signed Al Jefferson to a 3 year, $41 million dollar deal. This marks the biggest free agent signing in the franchise’s history, and while his defense leaves much to be desired he will address the Bobcat’s dire need of a low post scorer.
- Also resigned forward Josh McRoberts to a 2 year, $6 million deal. McBob played well for the Cats after being traded to Charlotte on the deadline, and will provide some scoring and rebounding ability off the bench.
Dallas
- With Darren Collison off to the Clippers, the Mavericks signed Jose Calderon to a 4 year, $29 million deal then followed up by signing former Maverick Devin Harris to a 3 year, $9 million deal. They overpaid a little for Calderon, but Harris and he should compliment each other. Yes, Calderon is a weak defender, but he also one of the best passing point guards in the league. Harris’ size and length make him a solid defender, and he comes a reasonable price.
Detroit
- Josh Smith signed a 4 year, $56 million deal. Incredibly risky by Detroit as it could jeopardize signing Greg Monroe to a long term deal. J Smooth can score, but will he make Detroit any better than a 6 seed in the East?
Portland
- Signed Earl Watson on a 1 year, $1.4 million deal. He’s a smart, veteran point guard that will see some minutes but will also act as a mentor to Damien Lillard.
- Signed Dorrell Wright to a 2 year, $6 million deal. Wright adds much needed depth for Portland.
Sacramento
- Brought back former King Carl Landry on a 4 year, $26 million deal. Landry has always been underrated, and bringing him back makes it more likely Sacramento will look to move either Jason Thompson or Patrick Patterson.
Washington
- Agreed to a two year deal with point guard Eric Maynor. For Maynor it is a return home, and he could see ample time playing behind John Wall. He’s a steady point guard who was set back by an ACL tear, but is an upgrade for the Wizard’s backcourt.
