The Orlando Magic concluded their stint in the Orlando Summer League with one more win and one more loss. Thursday against the Philadelphia 76ers rookie Victor Oladipo nailed a jumper 4.4 seconds left to give the Magic a thrilling win. In the proceeding day the Magic decided to rest Oladipo and two other starters, they ended up getting smashed by the Boston Celtics because of this.
The Positives
- Victor Oladipo: Oladipo has been one of the best players of the Summer League so far without a doubt. He continued to shine against Philly, leading all scorers with 24 points including the game winning shot which he drained with a hand in his face. He also added six assists and three rebounds in the game. Oladipo’s supposed biggest weakness out of college was his shooting. In the Summer League he showed potential to be a very dangerous outside shooter, he shot 3-5 from beyond the arch vs. Philly.
- Andrew Nicholson: Nicholson also had a great game against the 76ers as he recorded 23 points. I’ve already wrote some this summer about Nicholson’s shaky performances thus far in Summer League, it’s a nice sign to see him go out with a bang. He’s a player with a ton of talent and potential. Nicholson also played against the Celtics, but he only played 9 minutes and was limited to taking just two shots.
- Moe Harkless: Harkless is another player who had a strong outing vs. Philly but got to rest vs. Boston. Against the 76ers Harkless recorded 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Another great sign.
- Kyle O’Quinn: O’Quinn, like Harkless and Oladipo, played against Philly but did not against Boston. He’s shown signs of being a very good rebounder throughout the Summer League; he scored 7 points and snagged 11 boards against the 76ers.
- Free Throw Shooting: the Magic have been great from the charity stripe the entire Summer League, that trend continued in their final two fixtures. Against Philadelphia they knocked down 24-27 (88.9%) attempts and against Boston they were 11-13 (84.6%).
The Negatives
- Rebounding: the Magic were out-rebounded against both Philadelphia and Boston. Philadelphia out-rebounded them by a margin of 37-32 and Boston absolutely dominated them on the glass by a tally of 43-24.
- Assists: PG play was shaky for the Magic all of Summer League. They tried to play Victor Oladipo at PG and while he played great, he showed he’s going to have to do a lot of work if he ever wants to become a capable NBA PG. The opposition also had more assists than Orlando in both of their final games. Against Philly they trailed in assists by a margin of 12-22 and against Boston they trailed by a margin of 18-30.
